Brews in Brief: Allagash Tripel

  Posted on January 17th, 2010

Belgian-style Tripel
9.5% ABV | ?? IBU

Pours a faded gold with a white fizzy head. About 1/2 inch at first, slowly falling to a thin 1/8 inch that hangs around for the remainder of the pint.
Smells of bready yeast, slight clove aroma, some apple undertones, and a hint of pepper.
Spicy up front. White pepper gives way to some banana and clove flavor. A glimmer of candied fruit & sugar before a peppery hop takes over. A spicy hop bite in collusion with boozy warmth dominate the finish and long long aftertaste.
Initial sweetness increases as the beer warms, as does the hoppy ending.
A tad on the bitter side for a tripel. Lost is the characteristic Belgian candi-sugar. Found is a wit-like breadyness and a subtle-yet-assertive hop.
Light to medium body. A heavy but smooth carbonation aides drinkability. Allagash Tripel is slow sipper nonetheless.
